about

Reading Permutation City by Greg Egan, I have realized that, while I'm 100% materialist, there is a form of "conscience after death" I can believe in. Our conscience is the result of our mind watching itself - in other words, the result of a computation that affects itself. And computations can be described in terms of (very large) numbers, and numbers exist in a lot of different forms.
So, there is a chance (or maybe even a certainty) that the number that describes my mental process at a given time will exist again somewhere in the history of the universe. Will *I* be there? No idea, but it's still kinda comforting. And yes, I understand this concept is complicated and I don't know how to express it.

lyrics

And a mind is a pattern
A persistance of structure
And a mind is a watcher
And itself is the focus

It’s about the connections
And the sense of continuance
When you wake up and pretend
That you’re still the same person

It’s a question of scope
The extent of perception
You can’t see what’s above you
You can’t see what’s beneath

In the heart of a nova
In some strange calculations
Will the pattern return
Will the process resume?

And a mind is a pattern
A persistance of structure
And a mind is a watcher
And itself is the focus
